Cable News Network (CNN) sponsored the Compassion Forum on Sunday Night, April 13, 2008. During this broadcast, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were asked questions concerning their personal faith and how it relates to their political agendas. Hillary Clinton was asked a question that was definitely not a requirement to be the President of the United States. But, it probably gave meaning to the whole faith issue in politics. The moderator asked Hillary Clinton if she thought God would want her to be the next President of the United States. As usual, she gave a good politically correct answer. However, if God had been asked His opinion of Hillary Clinton, or even Barack Obama, being the next President of the United States, He would probably say “No.” Of course, the rationale for His decision would come from His Holy Word. In other words, God would compare His position on current social and moral issues with each candidate’s position on the same social and moral issues.
Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama both defend the rights of women to choose whether the unborn baby in their womb should be aborted or given life. Of course, both candidates seemingly do not accept that life begins at conception. However, God would disagree with both candidates. Throughout the Bible, God has already stated how He personally feels about abortion. His feelings are vividly expressed in the following Holy Scriptures. In Jeremiah 1:5, God states, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee.” King David in Psalms 22:9 states, “But thou art he that took me out of the womb.” In Psalms 139:13-14, King David writes, “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” As these scriptures definitely state, God knows each baby before it is born. He sees the baby in the mother’s womb. He is there at the birth of each baby, also. It is a dangerous thing to take a baby out of God’s divine hands and abort, or should I say kill, it at birth. Also, it is just as dangerous for a politician to purport the ungodly belief that unwanted babies could be aborted. Therefore, God would not want anyone to be the President of the United States who would support such barbaric actions, especially if it is for political gain.
Another social issue that Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama both agree on is the promotion of gay rights. They believe that homosexuals and lesbians should be given the same partnership rights as married men and women. They also believe that homosexuals and lesbians should basically be accepted as normal in the society at large. But, what would God say about their opinions on gay rights? God would totally disagree. In fact, despite the fact that He loves all people, His opinion of those who choose this kind of lifestyle is clearly stated in His Holy Word, also. As stated in Romans 1:26-27, Paul the Apostle wrote, “For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.” In Leviticus 18:22, Moses wrote, “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.” Also, in Leviticus 20:13, Moses wrote, “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination.” Therefore, when politicians go against the teachings of the Bible for political gain, such as defending the homosexual and lesbian lifestyle, they should realize that it is an abomination, too.
Now, let’s discuss Republican Senator John McCain’s views of abortion and gay rights. Also, would God want Senator John McCain to be the next President of the United States? First, Senator John McCain opposes abortions, except when the woman’s life is at risk. He opposes the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision of 1973. He is against partial-birth abortion. Senator McCain opposes the public financing of abortion. But, Senator McCain does support abstinence-only education, instead of financing birth control education. Therefore, if Senator John McCain is truthful in his position on abortion, God would probably want him to be President of the United States, since his stance would be in agreement with God’s teachings in the Bible.
Second, Senator John McCain opposes special rights for homosexuals and lesbians. He opposes gay marriages. He opposes making gay marriages equal to heterosexual marriages. Senator McCain opposes allowing gays to serve openly in the military. He opposes extending federal rights and benefits to same-sex couples. He also supports the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. Senator McCain opposes extending federal rights and benefits to same-sex couples, too. Therefore, since John McCain’s position on gay rights would be closer to God’s teachings in the Bible and not because he is a Republican, God would most likely vote for Senator John McCain.
However, even though John McCain’s views on abortion and gay rights are probably closer to God’s views than Senator Hillary Clinton’s and Senator Barack Obama’s views, it is still the American people that will choose the next President of the United States. But, God’s providential hand has always affected the history of mankind. Therefore, God’s choice for President of the United States will take the oath of office (hopefully on the Bible) and will occupy the White House in January 2009, whether the candidate’s faith is recognized by God or not. Of course, as any Bible-reading person should know, God used kings who rebelled against Him many times during Old Testament days to draw His backsliding children back to Him. Will He do it again?
