Reverends Gone Wild-The Ongoing Pastor Saga In America

Posted on April 02, 2008

By Holly Borei

For years I have been trying to determine how people who call themselves Christians can justifiably vote for a candidate who represents a down right evil platform. A liberal’s support for such abominations as gay marriage, abortion and other issues are repulsive to and are directly in defiance to the word of God. I could never understand how a person can sit in church on Sunday morning and then go out the very next day to rally around a candidate or become a candidate who not only supports such issues but fights to promote them as well.

Although I myself am a sinner who often falls short of the glory of God, my vote against such evil practices are a no-brainer to me. I had previously theorized that the problem lies with the misconception of many that one only has to attend a church or believe that Jesus exists to be a Christian. While it is true we are not saved by works, this is a misconception that falls far short of true salvation and can lead to a path of damnation.

If the 2008 primary has taught me anything, it is this. The problem with political support for evil ideas is far greater than misconception in the pew, it can also be traced directly to the pulpit.

According to the New York Sun, one Democratic presidential candidate has a pastor who opposed both Iraq wars, supports same-sex marriage, opposes the death penalty, and has been a passionate critic of American foreign policy. The article is not talking about Jeremiah Wright. It is speaking of Reverend Edward Matthews- a little-known Arkansas preacher who is the closest Senator Clinton has to a pastor- that has released videos stumping for Clinton.

During an interview with the New York Sun, Matthews expressed support for Sen. Barack Obama’s pastor Reverend Jeremiah Wright who has been seen on many clips damning America and promoting racism. Matthews maintains that the clips were taken out of context and “a totally different animal when you look at its full context,” rather than the minute-long clips widely circulated on the Internet and played nearly on a loop on cable news, which focus on his exclamation, “God D* America” and his racially charged criticism of Mrs. Clinton.

Video clips have also been revealed of a super delegate for Obama by the name of Rev. James T. Meeks preaching similar messages of racism against particular members of the government in the pulpit of the church he pastors.

It appears that America has a pastor problem that is not confined to one particular denomination. All the pastors named in this article pastor churches in different denominations. It is a problem that must be addressed by the body of Christ-which is the church.

What makes a pastor hang up his focus on the gospel to concentrate on liberal, political agendas? That I do not have the answer for. I do know that as heartbreaking as this revelation is, it should not have surprised me for we have been warned.

For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
