The Law of Attraction “The Real Secret” Part 2: A Christian Response to The Secret

Posted on July 13, 2007

By Ron McIntosh

Everywhere I go people are talking about “The Secret.” The book and DVD are on every best seller’s list and it seems every media outlet is commenting on it. I even saw on the ESPN website that an actress in her first poker tournament reached the semi-finals before losing. When asked the reason for her success, she said it was “The Secret.” What is the secret? It is the “Law of Attraction.” The Secret’s Law of Attraction says, “Like attracts like.” Everything that is coming to your life, you are attracting to yourself by your dominant thoughts. If you can see it in your mind, you can hold it in your hand. Those of you who read the original article, “The Real Secret,” know that I was contacted by Harrison House to write a book called “The Greatest Secret.” In my new book (due out just after the beginning of August), I state that God’s Law of Attraction is: you attract to yourself people, ideas and resources according to your most dominant thoughts. As you renew our mind, establish your heart, transform your personal belief system, and make your thoughts congruent to the laws of the kingdom of heaven, you attract the kingdom of heaven unto yourself. What is the kingdom of heaven? It is the rule and reign of God. It is the location and resources of God. In my last article, “The Real Secret,” I addressed the question, “What was your first reaction after reading “The Secret”? This question was based on a soon to be released DVD movie “The Source of the Secret.” I responded by stating, don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. There is a legitimate Law of Attraction (based on Matthew 16:19). But, The Secret is closer to The Force in Star Wars, than biblical truth. In this second article, I want to deal with the next two questions from “The Source of the Secret”:

  1. What do you think is right about The Secret?

What I love about “The Secret” is the Law of Attraction. It is a real law that works. You do attract people, ideas and resources according to your most dominant thoughts. As you renew your mind, transform your personal belief system (this is practically accentuated in my 256 page book, “The Greatest Secret”) and become congruent to kingdom law, you can attract the kingdom of heaven unto yourself.
The Law of Attraction is an automatic law. It happens whether you believe it or not. You are manifesting your most dominant thoughts. You might be thinking, “I don’t like what I’m manifesting.” Then you must learn to change your thinking. If you don’t like the output, change the input. There is a productivity law called, “The Law of Correspondence.” The Law of Correspondence states, your outside world corresponds directly to your inward world. Again this law is automatic. You are automatically manifesting your most dominant thoughts. The Law of Attraction is everywhere in scripture. Galatians 6:7, 8 says, “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked. A man reaps what he sows. One man sows to the flesh, and from the flesh will reap destruction. Another sows to the spirit, from the spirit will reap eternal life (Greek: zoe – the God kind of life). In other words, like attracts like. The Law of Attraction is really nothing more than Oral Robert’s seed faith on steroids. It is sowing and reaping, giving and receiving, along with mind renewal. What you think is what you sow, what you sow you reap. Like attracts like. It is everywhere in scripture. The beatitudes are basically the Law of Attraction. Matthew 5:3 begins the beatitudes with, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Blessed are the humble.
What is humility? It is submitting to the view and opinion of God. Blessed are those who submit to the view and opinion of God for they can attract the kingdom of heaven (location and resources of God). Here’s another example. Romans 12:14 states, bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Why do I bless and not curse? Is it because good people bless and bad people curse or are negative? Not really. It is because blessing attracts blessing and negativity reaps the repercussions of negativity. Similarly, in Luke 6:27 Jesus states, “…love your enemies, do good to them who hate you.” He goes on to add, “…even sinners love those who love them” (verse 32). Why? It is because loving attracts the benefits of love. Jesus even goes on to amplify with the Golden Rule, “Do unto others, as you would have them do to you” (verse 31). The Golden Rule still rules. Like attracts like.
Another example of the Law of Attraction is found in James 5:16, “…pray for each other, so that you might be healed. My book contains the amazing story of how Dodie Osteen was healed of metastatic liver cancer, understanding this element of the Law of Attraction. The next question from the DVD “The Source of the Secret” was:

  1. “Do you think there’s anything inherently dangerous in ‘The Secret’?”

I absolutely do! “The Secret’ is based on Quantum Physics (see the previous article for amplification). Quantum Physics excises God out of the process and makes an impersonal universe the source of granting opulence. This is dangerous at several levels. God’s blessing fits into 2 categories. 1. universal grace and 2. redemptive grace. In universal grace God has put certain laws in the universe for all of mankind to access. There are laws that work for everyone. The Law of Gravity is an example. If you jump off a building, you will likely hurt thyself. Another law in Physics is the Law of Entropy. The Law of Entropy states, “Anything left unattended tends toward chaos.” There are multiple repercussions. You leave your lawn unattended, it tends toward chaos. If you leave your family unattended, it tends toward chaos. Leave your body unattended…well, you get the picture. Another law in universal grace is the Law of Reciprocity. Give and it shall be given unto you. Giving promotes receiving (in many ways). Some laws however, fall under redemptive grace. These are things that happen, because a person is connected to the Father, through Jesus Christ. You see this in Matthew 13 where Jesus talks about the Parable of the Sower. The parable’s desired end is 30, 60 and 100 fold return from the Word of God. Almost in disgust the disciples asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?” It’s like they’re saying, who can understand such things? Jesus responds, “The knowledge of the secret’s of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them (verse 11). In another words, there are certain kinds of blessing or provision that only come to His believers. Here’s the danger: When Quantum Physics excises God out of the process for an impersonal universe, it can create confusion at several levels:

  1. Because there are laws God put in the universe, when they are activated without acknowledging Him, you create increase without recognition of God as its source. This tends to create success without good success. Joshua 1:8 talks about “good success.” What is good success? It is increase without divorce. It is advancement without family decimation, broken lives or a broken heart. This is a real danger.
  2. When you remove God from his laws you affect a person’s personal and eternal destiny.

A second danger is that The Secret’s Law of Attraction is closer to the Force in Star Wars than it is to biblical truth. It is Christian Science or Metaphysics, including mind over matter. In that sense it is more like the movie “The Matrix” than non-fiction. Lastly, “The Secret” can promote greed, avarice and materialism, without proper biblical mores. The Bible says you can’t serve 2 masters. You can’t serve God and mammon (Matthew 6:24). Most people think mammon is money. Really it is avarice. It is the pursuit of materialism. Most often such pursuits neglect the true priorities in our life: mates, family, children, friends or ministry. I don’t think the Law of Attraction promotes avarice by itself, because it is the heart of the person that makes the difference. Here’s an example: I once saw the trailer for a movie on TV called “Hollow Man.” In the movie, the star, Kevin Bacon injected himself with a serum that would make him invisible. The trailer led you to believe that once he was invisible he did detestable things…because no one could see him. It wasn’t the invisibility that was evil, it was the heart of the person. The Law of Attraction is a beautiful law of God’s provision. When God is excised out of the process, it is most dangerous
